By 2020, the world will generate 40 zettabytes of data. If 1 gigabyte were an 11 ounce cup of coffee, 1 zettabyte would equal enough coffee cups to fill up the Great Wall of China.
So when Reina Reyes had the opportunity to use data science to think about and solve some of the biggest problems in the Philippines, it presented a fascinating challenge to leverage her background in astrophysics. One example of a problem facing humans back on Earth: the traffic crisis of Metro Manila. To say that it's tough is an understatement. It's no surprise that carmageddon was named after a cosmic event!
Data, when communicated in a visual way, also helps us see the world in differently. One such revelation that Reina and artist Kelly Ramos surfaced is the true size of the Philippine archipelago relative to the United States - using legos!
After helping prove that galaxies cluster according to Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity, Reina is now a Data Scientist at Deal Grocer and an Analytics Adviser at Z-Lift Solutions. She also taught data analysis and data visualization at Ateneo de Manila University.
Reina is a part of a fast-growing trend of scientists, mathematicians, and statisticians using their skill set to solve problems using data. And she's not alone. George Roumliotis, a data science team leader at Intuit in Silicon Valley, also holds a doctorate in astrophysics.
But you don't have to be a scientist to appreciate data science, or leverage it for real world applications.
When Oliver Segovia started his career in Procter & Gamble's Consumer and Market Knowledge division, his first assignment was to forecast the demand of Safeguard's newly launched sachet business in the Philippines. To do that, he had to compile reams of retail sales, shipment, concept test, and distribution data. Back in 2005 (ancient history in the realm of data analytics!), P&G collected data manually and almost all analysis was done on Excel. Today, that is fast changing as the data gathering, data warehousing, and analytical capabilities of major enterprises are growing at an exponential rate. Both Globe and Smart, for example, are fast growing their data analytics capabilities.
Today, Oliver's familiarity with analytics has helped him in his startup. For example, AVA was one of the first few startups to publish internal data on the online shopping habits of Filipino women. Data-driven storytelling, one that brings together journalism, content marketing, and data analytics, are creating new marketing opportunities for startups to compete with bigger players.
